When not If

Your computer hard drive is going to fail. You may or may not be able to recover your data. This is the main reason it is imperative that you back up your important files. To make this easier and more foolproof, USE 1 AND ONLY ONE FOLDER FOR EVERYTHING. Create subfolders under this for different groups. Each program you install or use online has a default location where it stores the files/data it creates. Don't accept this location. Go to your single main directory, create a new folder if needed, and make this the default. Move all your existing files to this master library and change the defaults on each old program. Now at least once a week copy this one folder (which contains all the other folders) to a backup media. Use your search function to find ones you missed. Search for all *.doc or *.txt and drag&drop into your new file system..A USB external hard drive (I use this), or a memory stick, tape drive, R/W CD/DVD or any other removable form. Keep the last two and delete older ones. When the number of files grows too big, move groups not used much to a permanent media (burn on CD) and remove them from your file system. Label and store this in a safe place. i.e. 2002JTaxFiles. You might be amazed how much easier it is to find things that are now scattered throughout your computer. It will take some planning to figure how you group things (this will change at least 3 times), some time to implement it, and a little time to backup and clean but as they say "Pay me now or pay me later"

Scrolling

Try this now. Push (click) your scroll wheel or middle mouse button. If a circle with up and down arrows appears you can scroll by moving the mouse in that direction. The speed is proportional to the distance you move it. Some even read at a slow speed. When finished, click it again. It works for all serious browsers and a lot of popular software.

Protect Yourself

You get an email Subject: Your credit card is maxed out. Click on the link if you want to stop this abuse.  DON'T DO IT

Real companies will not send notices like this. If you have reason to believe it might be true or just want to make sure it's bogus, sign on to the company web site with the link you normally use. Verify that it is a " secure" site by looking for the lock symbol on your browser and/or the address starts with a https.xxx (The s stands for secure) Next time you sign into one of your sensitive sites, look for these things.

And of course never give any personal information or PIN numbers except in the login areas of familiar secure sites. Still in doubt: Call the company 800 number you have on file or find in a search engine.

Hiding Links

Spam (unsolicited advertizing sent in email) continues to be a problem costing millions of hours a year in lost time.

To slow down abuse on this site all email addresses are entered with a space. This helps "hides" address from the automatic programs that search the internet.

When using a link on our site (1) Retype the address without the space or (2) Copy the address and paste it into your email program and then remove the space.

Changing Text Size

Most browsers have a way to make the text size larger or smaller on your web pages.( This only works if the designer allows it and it is possible on this page )

On Microsoft Explorer or Firefox you can utilize this choosing "VIEW" on the top menu then "TEXT SIZE". Try several of the options to find the one best for you, with or without your glasses.
